If you are desperately hunting for something to give to Dad and Mum for Christmas, here’s a winner. A magazine subscription.
The name ‘The Oldie’ might cause some initial laughter. I resisted it at first. After all, I am not an oldie, am I? Now the monthly magazine appears in the mailbox, together with The Economist, The Spectator, The Weekly Guardian, Private Eye and half a dozen others news and scientific publications. I can’t get my hands on it for the next few hours. It’s a walk-away favourite.
"Why?" you ask. The magazine was launched by Richard Ingrams, one-time Editor of Private Eye, as an antidote to youth culture. It has been called ‘the new New Yorker’. It is wry, witty, informed and beautifully written.
Take a look at the delightful December cover for a starter. We all recognize Whistler’s mother but here she is set against a jolly Christmas background. Her gloomy expression has been converted to a smile and the obscure lacy object of the original has become frilly pink underwear. It’s the cover of the year for what I would nominate as ‘Magazine of the Year’.
