Chocolat was probably the novel that won Joanne Harris her wide readership but I enjoyed Gentlemen & Players even more and thoroughly recommend it. She is as good with a thriller as she is with the French country scenes of so many of her novels and stories.
It is difficult to put it down and the superb twist at the end adds to the excitement. You will skim back through the pages to see how you could possibly have got it all so wrong.
Gentlemen & Players reminded me of Gene Kemp’s The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler, my son’s favourite when he was ten or so. The reasons will become obvious as you read. That’s another top tip for any young reader.
