When we fork out almost the price of a book for a newspaper in the English language here in the Geneva region, I frequently have a Scrooge-style winge.

The Guardian Weekly arrives faithfully in the mailbox every Friday and provides a fine synthesis of the week’s news with the bonus of the best crossword of the previous week – often the one by the grand old man of setters, Araucaria.

Imagine my delight to learn that there is a Guardian weekly podcast available FREE. It took a while to download the iTunes player available on this website, but it was well worth the effort.

Now, the news is read to me by an attractive voice that never sounds like a synthesised computer voice.
