Kate Atkinson’s One Good Turn, is almost as enjoyable as the very first novel she published.

Behind the Scenes at the Museum was one of those memorable, very moving stories that you re-read to see how you could have missed the obvious on your first read. It confirmed Kate Atkinson as a master story teller and won the 1995 Whitbread Book of the Year Award.

I was disappointed by the two that followed, Human Croquet and Emotionally Weird.

One Good Turn, for me, echoes the earlier quality. I particularly enjoyed the way Kate Atkinson used the Edinburgh setting with a wry occasional sideways glance at the Fringe Festival, which is concurrent to the crime thriller that is unfolded as we move from character to character.

As usual, there is a nasty twist at the end.
