If you are able to sneak a long weekend or an Easyjet trip to London, my top theatre recommendation of the moment is Alan Bennett’s The History Boys at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing it for years and we manged to get seats through Lovetheatre.com. You still have time before it closes on April 26th.

The dialogue is, at times, very amusing and yet the story of a headmaster obsessed with getting his boys into Oxbridge ends tragically for some of the characters.

We were delighted with the polished performance and the brilliant combination of a standard stage set with various effects – visual and sound.

A colleague commented what a wonderful play it would be to teach to our senior students – there’s a wealth of erudite reference and intellectual awareness. Sadly, though, she concurred, there is the problem of the ubiquitous male sexuality. The students would thoroughly enjoy and understand it but their parents would probably stuffily complain about our using it as a school text.  See what you think if you get a chance to see it!
