This week’s crossword is an advanced cryptic – it is of the ‘definition and letter mixture’ type. Each clue gives you a definition and a jumble of the letters of the answer, with one extra letter in it. Those extra letters spell out a helpful message.  Some lights, or squares, have no clues attached to them and you need to work out what to put in them. Help is given in the message spelt out by the extra letters.

For example, in 1 Across, the definition prompts you to look for a toboggan. The letters of ELDES(T) G are a jumble of SLEDGE and you have the first T of the hidden message.
