WRG radio and the Geneva Writers’ Group are sponsoring a short story writing contest. The rules are simple: write a maximum of 300 words and send it in by 27 June. For those who need inspiration or handholding to get started, you have time to fit in two Saturday morning workshops offered by the writing group, one on "Writing memoir as mosaic," this weekend (12 May) and another on "Tapping creativity (shaping images from dreams into stories), 9 June. Word around town is that the 100+ group’s workshops are interesting and useful for those who want to stretch their writing muscles.

So here is my own opening, a mere 78 words! Think of the places I could take this story.

We never phoned the police, but after staring at the window opposite for a day I broke down. "His legs are sticking out the window. Since yesterday. Feet above knees. Yes, he’s rigid." Minneapolis winters were cold, but not cold enough to freeze your legs off, although if you left them hanging out the window long enough, maybe. I worried how they got there. "Head over heels in love?" J chuckled, and another beer popped open behind me.

Your turn.
