It’s another one of those days when there’s plenty of real news, the stuff that makes and shakes the universe, such as Clinton winning in the US primaries, China’s premier taking inflation on board, EU commissioners stepping into battle gear to fight the evil tax evaders.
And there is also plenty of the other kind of news, that makes us refill our coffee cups, ignore the e-mail piling up and block out people who want our attention, including the boss who thinks there is work to be done.
Here’s some of it, for those tempted by the distraction:
- Hamsters in hot demand: BBC
- In Italy, a man is sent to prison for sending photos of his ex-girlfriend to 15,000 e-mail addresses, with her phone number, and posting it on the Internet. The photos appeared to show her in sexually compromising positions. Reuters
- Dannielynn Hope has been declared by a judge to be the sole heir to the estate of former model and celebrity Anna Nicole Smith, who died in 2007. Smith’s estate has been the centre of an ongoing battle between her lawyers and the family of her second husband, who left her his fortune. CNN
- In an optimistic twist on the global warming story, the IHT says champagne makers in France are looking to Britain as a possible champagne-making centre, thanks to climate change. Cheers!
- Hyenas lead soap opera lives, says an American researcher, who’s been tuned in to the drama for the past two years. IHT
- Mint is jazzing up the cucumber sandwiches on white bread as the Plaza Hotel starts to offer afternoon tea once again, following a three-year, $400 million renovation and the introduction of a French chef. CNN
