Sidney Rittenberg’s remarkable story, from US soldier to friend of Mao to 16 years in solitary confinement, is one of the great tales of the 20th century, Now the Guardian carries a wonderful 5-minute video interview with the man, who reflects on the changing China he has seen from a perspective few others have. Amazon carries his 2001 autobiography, “The Man Who Stayed Behind”, with reviews.
