There can be only one reason why gardeners are deprived of their gardens for several weeks, sometimes months, during this season called winter: it must be good for us. We talk to our families again, we straighten our backs and I believe it even strengthens our eye muscles. For three-quarters of the year we walk out of the house looking hard at the ground. We seek out new weeds, new insects and other signs of life marching on.
And then hard frosts, freezing temperatures and snow hit. Our eyes reach further, to admire the new snow. Or, as happened this morning, we simply look up at the sky and out at the distance. Good for the eyes, balm for the soul.
