Geneva's street parties begin

Geneva's street parties begin

One of my favorite events in Geneva is without a doubt, the Ville est-a-vous, or loosely translated, the town belongs to you.

The concept is simple: the streets in Geneva are public spaces that belong to the people at large who may use them to express and enjoy themselves.

For the sixth consecutive year, the City  through neighborhood associations, is organizing outdoor parties and flea markets in designated streets.

Nine neighborhoods invite city residents, to set up shop in the streets, and to sell everything from bicycle parts to old Christmas ornaments. Show up early, street space is free and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are interested in selling food, you must attend one of the neighborhood meetings in order to register. Food sales permits are free, but you are required to use biodegradable plates and utensils and must attend a free orientation meeting provided by the Health Department.

In addition, public stages are set up for residents to share their hidden talents. Just sign up and perform!

This year’s gatherings include three additional neighborhoods: Acacias, Saint-Gervais and Coulouvrenière, however, the over-the-top Paquîs market has been eliminated as well as the less exciting Concorde market.

It is time to empty your “caves”, your attic, your garage and sell. Time to browse and buy! Time to listen to music as loud as you can. This is one of my favorite Geneva fests: La ville est a vous.
The street is yours, so sell as much as you want
The streets are yours
