In spite of the capricious Swiss summer weather, there are still plenty of steamy days fit for swimming. The question is, rive droite, or rive gauche?
While most Geneva residents can easily figure out two options: Bains des Paquis and Geneve Plage, there are 27 other points of access to Lake Geneva in the Canton and more around the Lake’s perimeter.
Bacteriological tests are done to the water every other week – from May to October – and the results are posted (and warnings issued) in the Canton’s official website. The site also offers a guide to and pictures from all of the public beaches in Canton Geneva.
Lake Leman also has many other public beaches in Cantons Vaud and Valais, and neighboring France. There are 116 in total, 91 of which are considered to be of very good quality for swimming. The interactive guide, available in French only, is easy to use and offers users information on water quality, facilities available and activities allowed in each of the beaches.
Swiss health authorities discourage bathers from swimming in the rivers around the area.
Remember most of these areas close for swimming in October but many will remain open to stroll and spend a nice fall day.
