Geneva, Switzerland – Visiting the UN might not sound like the kind of “fun” activity for entertaining kids on a summer afternoon in Geneva, but the scene of little ones in swimsuits dancing among the synchronized water jets at the UN Plaza during the summer, tells a different story.
Everyday groups of parents, grandparents, child minders and kids spend time in front of the Broken Chair monument in Place des Nations, or Nations square, directly across from the UN Palace in Geneva.
The fun is provided by the “dry” fountains; a series of subterranean water jets that are synchronized to provide an aquatic architecture for the open space.
The work inaugurated in 2007, is a “symbolic reminiscence of the passing of time,” according to creators Arlette Ortis & Christian Drevet.
Kids however, may simply say it’s fun. The water almost “dissapears and then comes back with a fury” said one man who was playing with his children. “It’s fun for them and it’s fun for me too,” he added laughingly.
If you’re visiting Geneva, have just moved here, or simply have not yet been to the UN Plaza, you can get there via several bus and tram lines.
After you get there, let the water games begin!
