Geneva, Switzerland – Do you know what a Pedibus is? Well, it is sort of a school bus for small children. The Pedibus, just as any school bus line, collects students at scheduled stops. But the similarity ends there.
The pedibus can be described as an ambulatory service relying on the children’s own force to usher them to school grounds.
Children are “picked up” and taken to school on foot by volunteer parents. Kids join the Pedibus at various points or stops along the way, in accordance with a pre-defined, fixed timetable.
Parents can begin their own Pedibus routes through their local schools.
Joining a “walking bus” gives children the opportunity to walk in groups, follow timetables, understand the dangers of the street, and enjoy the walk.
The walking bus was created in 1991 by an Australian, David Engwicht, who thought of alternative ways to have less traffic.
The Pedibus came to Switzerland, via Lausanne in 1999 and is now widely popular across the country.
Do you pedibus to work?
