Geneva, Switzerland – New snow is expected this weekend in Geneva and surrounding areas which has me thinking, what better excuse to have some – free – fun on the slopes. Boot up and get ready to visit St Cergue, a small town near Nyon.
We visited last week. There were hundreds of people, mostly families with kids and even a few families with dogs. People were snowshoeing, snow sliding, cross-country and back-country skiing. There are a few great reasons to visit Saint Cergue: it is not far from Geneva, there are a dozen trails ready to be enjoyed, and a whole lot of fresh snow. These trails are in addition to the town’s downhill ski and snowboarding pistes which means there’s winter fun galore for all.
You can get to Saint Cergue by car or train. However, if you do drive keep in mind that parking may a bit challenging. Taking the train is, in my opinion, the most sensible option. The train stop is only a few steps away from where the trails begin.
You can also rent skis, snowshoes/webs, or snow sleds for reasonable prices, which makes your commute hassle free. If you do not have any sports equipment, head to the Caritas sports store in Plainpalais, which has one the largest collection of secondhand winter sports items available.
Of course there are other options as well, but having tried this one myself, I can vouch for a fun day outdoors. Don’t get discouraged if it rains in Geneva because in St Cergue it will probably be snowing! Shirley Curran, GenevaLunch’s book reviewer and a former ski professor who lives in the French Jura, writes a weekly update on weather and ski conditions in the area. Look for it every Friday as part of the latest “Weekend snow and winter sports reports”.
