Geneva, Switzerland – Lucerne and Onex in canton Geneva are the featured cities for the 2010 Swiss tasting week, which began on 16 September across Switzerland.

The Swiss tasting week, known in French as La Semaine du Gout, is a 10-day celebration of local and Swiss products. All kinds of products, and not just the iconic cheese and chocolate, including wine, sausages and even lettuce!

Onex, located at the eastern end of the canton, is the first Swiss suburb to be picked as a “star” of the Swiss tasting week.

According to organizers, picking Onex, “a town with a population with limited economic resources”, sends a clear message: “To encourage better eating habits in urban populations, encourage better product and produce selection, all without increasing the family budget.”

The town will host  a fruit and vegetable market 25 and 26 September and several seminars including “How to grow a veggie patch on your balcony”.

Lucerne, as the other star of the Swiss tasting week, will also be hosting activities.

As part of this yummy week, the best Young Confectionery Chef of French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, will be picked on 25 September during a student contest at the Ecole professionnelle de Montreux.

It is Swiss tasting week after all, so if you want to learn a Swiss recipe check the Swiss culinary heritage site, which as part of this celebration, offers this year’s recipe: croquetes, or sweet, dry biscuits. The recipe is given in the four national languages, but not in English.
