New Year celebration in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland – New to Geneva or simply spending New Year’s Eve in the city? Here’s something free and fun for those willing to venture out in the cold.

The Geneva New Year’s eve outdoor celebration is back for its 2011 edition after a year hiatus.

Every year the city offers a réveillon from 22:00 to 2:30 in Old Town which in 2011 will include an alcohol-free villa, giant karaokes and video displays.

Food and drink stalls will sell items at “reasonable prices” says the city of Geneva and the sales will benefit non-profit foundations serving the homeless, those with less means and those escaping situations of domestic violence.

Get your disco ball ready and dust off those old bell bottoms and have yourself a Happy San Silvestre.

Schedules of public parties in Old Town

  • Cour St-Pierre (Latin flavored party)
22:30 – 23:30 and from 22:30 – 2:30 DJ Rumba (Cuban CJ based in Fribourg) and DJ Mas (this last one well known for his Latin House, Bachata and Reggaeton style)
23:45 – 00:30 Con To’ los Hierros (an eight-member ensemble with congas, timbales, piano, trumpet and saxophone)
  • Place du Bourg-de-Four
22:30 – 01:00 DJ Djerem (from Lausanne with Electro and House music)
01:00 – 02:30 DJ Rom Beads (Geneva-based DJ with classic electronic and new age music)
  • At the Canons (arsenal square in front of Geneva’s City Hall – Alcohol free option sponsored by Fegpa)
22:00 – 01:00 DJ Piépié (will play music for families with old favorites and disco classics)

If you drink a bit too much to drive remember the volunteer-taxi-like service Nez Rouge Genève offers you a ride home from 22:00 to 6:00 on New Year’s Eve. Thus, no need to risk driving while under the influence. Although the service is free, the organization relies on donations so feel free to leave a few bucks for a good cause.

The number is 022 710 2777 or 0800 802 208.

We hope you all enjoy Geneva in the new year.
