GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - Early in the morning, Geneva’s local farm producers and cooks, gather at one of the most dazzlingly colorful outdoor markets in the city: the Plain of Plainpalais. In my opinion, this is one of the most picture-postcard-perfect outdoor food markets in the city and the only one that runs on Sundays.
At the Plaine, you’ll find gorgeous fresh and dried fruits, artful displays of pasta, wine -in winter mulled wine-, “old-world” vegetables, mushrooms, cheese, Valais specialties, home-made jams, freshly made bread, olives, flowers and more.
Many Genevans meet on Sunday to eat “sur place” -others to take away- some of the awesome roasted chicken or duck, waffles, panini, pancakes, churros, middle-eastern food or pastries sold by the many vendors that go on Sundays.
Next to it, there is also a small open-air market filled with artisans, importers and designers displaying their wares, mostly clothes or hand-made jewelry. The only vendors allowed on Sundays are those that sell “new items”, however, on the first Sunday of the month there is also a flea market (second-hand items), but usually with no more than 10 stalls.
The official schedule is from 8:00 to 19:00, however, by 15:00 most of the vendors start going home.

This vendor specializes in “old-world” vegetables and home-made jams. His displays are worth checking out.
Have a great Sunday!

Olives and mushrooms are one of the main attractions at the outdoor food market in Plainpalais on Sundays.
