Geneva, Switzerland - The Swiss lifestyle magazine Edelweiss kicked off on 16 September a four-day fashion extravaganza featuring this and next season’s jewelry and clothing collections at the trendy and quaint Tiffany Hotel.
Each room at the Tiffany hotel, and two galleries at the Quartier de Bains, Uniquement Votre and Alternative Brand Communication, serve as showrooms where 40 designers meet the fashionistas and sell their creations.
Several boutiques are also part of the show including four that will extraordinarily open on Sunday 19 September: Ma Vie sur Mars, Notting Hill, Un Jour ou l’Autre and Whisper.
Geneva, Switzerland – This weekend eat fish freshly caught – as in hours earlier – in Lake Geneva. This is one tip that made my mouth water, today’s fisherman’s catch.
For this one, you’ll have to cross the border to Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva’s French riviera.
Each Saturday during July and August, local fishermen sell their fresh catch, known as the “retour de peche.”
After coming back from fishing, these fishermen set up their stalls (thus the “retour de peche” name.)
Where? At the Porte de Rive, in front of the Ecomusee – a museum dedicated to the local fishing history – starting at 08:30 and until noon.
Then, for a truly Geneva experience, how about trying a regional favorite, filet of perche with parsley and chive sauce. Read more…
Geneva, Switzerland – This is Geneva shopping at its best: a Magnificent and Noble watch and jewel sale at Sotheby’s.
I, for once, will be keeping an eye on the emeralds, on a 52-carat diamond ring and on some exceptional watches.
If you happen to have CHF7.23 million laying around, you could buy not only the diamond pictured above, but also the right to name it.
And where can you get a glimpse of all this glitter? At the Beau Rivage Hotel in Geneva. The exhibition of all items for sale begins on Saturday 8 May at 9:00, and remains open until the sale begins on 9 May at 20:00 hours.
The two-day auction promises colored diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and watches of “significance”, all on offer in the heart of Geneva. Read more…
Geneva, Switzerland – Vintage handbags, designer suits & dresses – think Dior, Chanel, and American brands – will be for sale this weekend in Geneva and for a good cause: the Salvation Army-sponsored programs in Geneva and French-speaking Switzerland.
On Saturday 13 March the otherwise low-key store becomes a brand name vintage seller, so prepare to shop starting at 10:00.
Geneva, Switzerland – And today’s question is: are your eggs fresh? That is easy to tell. All you need to do is to visit the “what’s on your egg” website and enter the number printed on the egg. The results will tell you when it was put on the shelf, where it came from, and how the mother hen lived until the day she popped that egg: free range, in the barn or battery raised.
The site tracks down all EU eggs, but not Swiss eggs. Don’t despair: the Migros supermarket’s site allows you to search your egg’s background and postal code information. Read more…
Geneva, Switzerland – What do you get if you mix: Local produce, food shopping, the internet and a bicycle? Before I answer this question, I have to say it came to my mind after reading my colleague’s (Jonell) blog about cardoons being in season. It reminded me of three things: Read more…
Geneva, Switzerland - Let’s face it, winter is around the corner and you know what that means for your vehicle: time to put on the winter tires.
Where to find the best deal on tires in Geneva and the Lake Geneva area? The consumer-oriented magazine Bon a savoir carried out a study and reported the best deals are found online.
According to the weekly magazine, the best site on the net in Switzerland is pneus-online which offers tires, or pneus, at reasonable prices.
Of course you can also find great deals by checking the auto section of Anibis the largest classified site in French-speaking Switzerland.
Beat the rush and get your car “winterized” before the snow flies in the ski stations.

Update: For the 2010 edition read: The Paquis fleamarket 2010 in danger
Geneva, Switzerland – The mother of all neighborhood flea markets is back, or better said, never went away. That’s right, we are talking about the Paquis flea market. Previously in New To Geneva? Me Too, we mentioned the famous Fetes de Rues, also known as the La Ville est a Vous and how this year these parties did not include the ever so big and notorious Paquis event.
The Paquis flea market will be taking place after all on 19 and 20 September but not under the City banner of La Ville est a vous but under the name: La Rue est a vous.
Geneva, Switzerland – For me one of the great things in Geneva is shopping at “Ismael’s.” I am not talking about a fancy shop but rather a very friendly vegetable and fruit vendor that comes to my neighborhood twice a week.
All fresh, edible things found in my house come from the mobile stall that he sets up in Saint-Jean every Tuesday and Friday.
Ismael Novoa has been my veggie guru in Geneva since we moved to Switzerland. “That’s called Choux and it is very commonly used in Geneva for hearty winter soups,” he says in his thick Galician accent. Once I grabbed a bunch of heavy, pale green pears which I thought would make a great snack for my constantly hungry daughter.
“No,” he chuckled.
