Geneva, Switzerland – The incredible Sotheby’s sale this past week took most of my shopping attention, but after seeing up close those 6- to 52-carat diamonds and rare watches going for millions of dollars, I decided to turn my short attention span to another kind of more affordable vintage shopping: flea markets.
This weekend 15-16 May, the City of Geneva begins its neighborhood parties and flea-markets labeled under the city-is-yours slogan or la ville est a vous. Anyone who is not a professional seller can go early, throw down a blanket or set up a stall, and sell his/her “own vintage collection” and I mean, anything in your vintage collection. The space is free.
Grottes, first fair:
Geneva, Switzerland – Get ready for some serious shopping as thousands of books are up for sale today and tomorrow (23 and 24 April) at the bi-annual sale at the Library in English located in Paquis. Thousands of secondhand books for adults and children, audio-books on CD, magazines, and DVDs are for sale.
The library is nestled in the beautiful Emmanuel church building near Lake Geneva and boasts a selection of over 14,000 books in English.
“We carry a bit for everyone,” says librarian Pam Scott. “We have a really large and eclectic selection of books. There are American, Australian, British, and Indian popular authors available all year-round”.
Geneva, Switzerland – Two semi-annual kids’ consignment sales are taking place in the Lake Geneva region this weekend 17 and 18 April.
This is a fun, smart way to buy and sell (although it is now too late to register as a seller) kids’ toys, clothes, baby and sports equipment, books, DVDs and even some pregnancy clothes.
Geneva, Switzerland – Here’s an idea for a lazy afternoon: visiting the Voltaire’s museum, his one-time residence in Geneva.
Les Délices de Voltaire is the name of the beautiful chateau located in the heart of the city of Geneva where the French philosopher lived from 1755 to 1760.
The chateau is today a museum dedicated entirely to Voltaire’s work, including a library with 25,000 books related to his work and to the 18th Century.
Some items that once belonged to Voltaire or that decorated the house while he lived there, such as those shown in the picture at left, have returned to the chateau to be part of the exhibit.
Geneva, Switzerland - I said it a year ago, and I’ll say it again: GenevaLunch is one of my favorite websites! Why the fanaticism? One simple reason; great insights and local tips for living in the Lake Geneva Region. In 2009 I wrote about a great deal I found on the GenevaLunch resources page, later confirmed by friends and local resource gurus Nunzio and Imane: the assiette Genevoise card. With this card, two people can eat for the price of one at a range of Geneva restaurants. Now that’s a deal!
Geneva, Switzerland – Today’s Geneva tip will not burn a hole in your pocket but might leave your mouth watering. Learn how to bake your own Swiss-style bread. Once a month the Association des Amis du Four à Pain Saconnésien, loosely translated as Saconnex’s Bread Oven Friends Association, provides a 4-hour course on how to bake the perfect loaf.
The classes are taught in French by expert, local boulangers and help you to prepare, sponge, knead, rise and bake a perfect loaf. This month’s feature is cream and honey bread – also known as torsadé. In April, learn to make the bee’s nest, or Nid d’abeille.
Each class is CHF20, which is only CHF5/hour: now that’s a bargain. Register right away as courses fill up quickly! Other courses will include Neuchatel-style bread.

Geneva, Switzerland – Whoever said there are never clearance sales or good deals in Geneva has never shopped the last weekend in January when most, if not all, stores slash their prices up to 70%.
Granted, 70% off a CHF5,000 cardigan may hardly seem a bargain but I was able to find some great deals, say, hand-made Italian boots in leather for CHF45. One caveat though, three sizes too big for me. Never mind that. They might be your size. I found Kookai pants for CHF30, and some cute snow boots for only CHF15. So, there’s hope. Even consignment and second-hand stores are reducing their prices!
The best deals in town can be found Friday and Saturday (29, 30 January.) Take advantage now because the second largest sale won’t take place until the end of summer when most people are still away on holidays.
Happy shopping!

Geneva, Switzerland - Let’s face it, winter is around the corner and you know what that means for your vehicle: time to put on the winter tires.
Where to find the best deal on tires in Geneva and the Lake Geneva area? The consumer-oriented magazine Bon a savoir carried out a study and reported the best deals are found online.
According to the weekly magazine, the best site on the net in Switzerland is pneus-online which offers tires, or pneus, at reasonable prices.
Of course you can also find great deals by checking the auto section of Anibis the largest classified site in French-speaking Switzerland.
Beat the rush and get your car “winterized” before the snow flies in the ski stations.

Geneva, Switzerland – A fun weekend activity for kids and adults in Geneva is to visit the Botanical Gardens, its exhibits, and the incredible carousel on its premises.
The Carrousel des fables was created as a tribute to the fables written by French poet, Jean de la Fontaine. The metal structure recreates many of the characters in the fables. A truly formidable mix of machinery and imagination.
