MONTREUX, SWITZERLAND – Gorgeous weather and fresh sounds made for a crowded scene on day two of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
German a capella group, the Slixs put a cool touch on the sun baked crowd at Parc Vernex as the evening began, followed by the soul slingers, Brandy Butler and the Foxionaires.
The tone at Miles Davis Hall was distinctly toned down last night with acoustic performances from both Ed Sheeran and Chris Cornell.
Sheeran’s passionate singer/songwriter skills were on display with the singer “taking advantage of the quietly respectful audience, to play another slow song.”
Amorous pursuit seemed to be the theme du jour with several calls to love including a cover of “Be my husband,” which Sheeran introduced saying: “Let’s all make babies!” It seems he is truly a lover and not a fighter.
Not really my cup of tea, but the crowd went wild.
As if that were not enough to inflame the tender passions, Chris Cornell (formerly of Soundgarden and Audioslave), wooed Miles Davis Hall with an acoustic set built around a guitar and his now iconic voice.
At the end of the evening I felt I needed a good drink… of water, the shows left me thirsty.
As per my note on the First Aid Kit show on opening night, there is certainly a place for prosaic performances at Montreux, but a full evening of shows in the same vein doesn’t leave much for the imagination.
