Geneva, Switzerland (Tribune de Geneve, Fre and GenevaLunch) – Ruth and Bruce Rappaport, an Israeli-Swiss couple who have long been active in the local business community, have donated CHF1.5 million to the Fondation Artères to completely renovate the intensive and intermediate care units as well as the heart programme unit at Geneva’s pediatric hospital, part of Geneva University Hospitals (HUG). The donation was made by the couple’s Geneva-based Inter Maritime Foundation, which focuses on education and health projects. The renovation will begin in Spring 2008 and be completed before the end of the year.
The Children’s Hospital has a chronic overload problem in these units, regularly operating at 140%, with more than 100 children sent to other cantons each year because of the shortage of space. The Rappaports, who have long donated to projects around the world, say they want to offer something to children in Geneva, their "adopted city."
Bruce Rappaport came to international attention as owner of the Inter Maritime Bank, later the Bank of New York-Inter Maritime, heavily involved in shipping and trade financing. He’s been in the news frequently over the years for what often appeared to be personal involvement in large deals in a variety of countries.
