Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – New arrivals at the spring session of the Swiss military recruits’ schools Monday 9 March will be offered free MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccinations, part of the government’s efforts to fight the rise in measles cases in Switzerland. The shots will be voluntary.

The army has purchased 12,000 doses of the vaccine. Soldiers will be offered the optional vaccinations in April 2009. The Federal health department notes that Switzerland has been touched by the spread of measles more than any other European country in recent years.
