Désalpes – down come the cows
There are dozens of these, some more for tourists than farmers and some the other way around. The cows have spent three months in high pastures and while most are driven down in trailers now, some are still decorated for a village fête and are walked at least part of the way down from the fields.
Two in Valais that are mainly for the locals, but you’ll be very welcome:
19 September, Anzères, Valais, down from the Serin pastures, with a parade at 11:00 through the resort, with the cows ending at the Place du Restaurant de la Poste. From noon, raclette cheese, grilled sausages and more. Alpage cheeses on sale, crafts market, and more (inflatable chateau for the kids).
26 September, Grimentz, down from the Moiry pastures, brunch at an alpage above the village at 10:00 and parade at 11:30 through this charming and historically rich village. Lively and a personal favourite – a chance to discover one of the most beautiful and architecturally interesting Valais mountain villages, if you don’t yet know it.
And one in Valais for the tourists, including locals, that’s recently been revived:
19 September, Crans-Montana, cows down from 7 pastures high above the resort, with a parade starting at 11:30.
Vaud, a hit with the tourists – and locals:
3 October, St Cergue. This is the famous and colourful one near Geneva, a show put on for tourists from the Lake Geneva area, with locals happily getting into the spirit of it. A lovely parade and plenty of interesting things going on around it, including regional food and crafts markets.
Improve your driving
26-27 September: TCS (Touring Club Suisse) in Cossonay near Lausanne, check out the new Western Vaud Technique and Skills Training driving centre, CHF20 million and two years in the making – you’ll be able to try your skills on a skidding stretch and a new all-terrain section will be open, with dozens of activities for future and current drivers.
Improve your wine knowledge
26 September: The Fête du raisin in Féchy starts at 10:00, with wine-tasting until 19:00 and a party for the rest of the evening. Fun, a popular 18-year-old tradition in one of the best wine villages in La Côte, the hillsides above Lake Geneva. Details in English
Meet one of this century’s great British writers
26 September: Julian Barnes, British writer of renown, is one of a series of authors who will be talking – and meeting the public – at the Jan Michalski writers/literature centre. Event is at 17:00 and costs only CHF10, but tickets are limited. Also, your chance to discover this amazing building.
