GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / BOOK MY PLACE – It is the evocation of Shetland that renders Ann Cleeves’ Thin Air such a magic read. The story is set on the northernmost island, Unst and we are taken into the heart of the little community with its traditions, its mists and its light nights.
Four friends have travelled north from London to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends to a Shetlander but during the night of the wedding party, one of them, Eleanor, disappears – into thin air.
Before she disappeared, Eleanor said she had seen a child in white, dancing on the beach and her friend, Polly, one of the four, sees the same ‘spectre’ that Eleanor claimed was the ghost of a child who drowned in the 1920s. We are led to suspect that some hidden secret is behind Eleanor’s disappearance and her murder – her body is discovered lying in a small loch near the cliff edge.
Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are in charge of the investigation and with them, we interview the Londoners and slowly work towards the shocking truth.
