The GL guide to managing your finances is designed for people who have recently moved to the Lake Geneva region, as well as those who have lived here for years but know there is always more to learn about money management.
The true cost of living and saving
by Sarah Cumberland
Many of us living in the Lake Geneva region are all too aware that we are based in one of the world’s most expensive areas. Rents can be higher here than in Paris or New York (if less than in Moscow or London), it’s easy to pay CHF100 for a basic haircut and the average price of a fillet of beef is more than CHF80 per kilo. The International Geneva Welcome Centre estimates that a family of four needs a monthly net income of at least CHF7,000 just to maintain a modest standard of living.
This guide suggests some smart ways to curb spending as well as highlighting some of the financial traps to watch out for so you have money left over to enjoy Switzerland and France.
